A live quiz is a game the whole class plays at the same time. You show the questions on a projector or TV, students answer on their phones, and the leaderboard moves after every question.

The teacher shows the code and QR on the projector, students answer on their phones, and the leaderboard moves after every question. Fast, correct answers earn more points.

Before class

  1. Create a quiz of the kind Live (or use any quiz with multiple choice, true or false, short answer or fill-in questions).
  2. In Settings › Live session, choose:
    • the time per question (30 seconds to start),
    • Show leaderboard after each question,
    • Show the correct answer after each question,
    • Allow joining late,
    • an optional scheduled start, with a notification to students beforehand.
  3. Publish the quiz.

Run it

  1. Start a session

Open the quiz and choose Start live quiz. You can also shuffle the question order for this session. Students in the course get a notification with the code.

  2. Show the lobby

Put the host screen on the projector. It shows a 6-character join code and a QR code. Students scan the QR, or go to the join page and type the code. Names appear as they join. You can remove anyone who shouldn’t be there.

  3. Play

Choose Start quiz once at least one student has joined. Each question shows on the big screen and on students’ phones with a timer. You see how many have answered; choose End question early if everyone is done.

  4. Between questions

The correct answer, the answer distribution and the leaderboard show, depending on your settings. Choose Next question to continue.

  5. Finish

After the last question choose Show final results: the top performers, and for each student their rank, total points, accuracy, best streak and a question-by-question breakdown. End session early skips the remaining questions.

How points work

  • A correct answer is worth 1,000 points.
  • Speed bonus: answering faster earns up to 50% more.
  • Streak bonus: each correct answer in a row adds 10%, up to 50%.
  • Wrong or missing answers score nothing and reset the streak.

Students who aren’t in the class yet

If someone opens the code but isn’t enrolled in the course, they can Ask to join. Their request shows on your host screen under Waiting to join: Let in adds them to the class and the quiz, or turn them away. Depending on how the class is set up, students may also be able to Join class and play straight away. They stay in the class afterwards.

Limits

The Gratis plan allows a limited number of live quizzes a month and players per quiz. Paid plans have no limits. See the pricing page for current numbers.

Tips

  • Use a short time per question (15 to 30 seconds) to keep energy up.
  • Show the correct answer after each question; that’s where the learning happens.
  • Use a practice round with two easy questions so everyone knows how it works.
