You never copy grades anywhere. Once something is graded, it shows up in the gradebook and on report cards.

Find what needs grading

  • The Grading › Grades page shows Needs grading across every course you teach, oldest first.
  • A course’s overview lists work waiting to be graded under Needs your attention.
  • Each assignment shows how many students handed in and how many are left: “3 of 15 students handed in”.

Grade an assignment

Open the assignment and choose Grade N submissions. The grading screen shows the student’s work on one side and the grade on the other.

  1. Look at the work

Files and photos open in the viewer, with download. Text answers and links show in full. If the student handed in several attempts, switch between them.

  2. Score it

Enter a score from 0 to the total, or choose Pass or Fail for pass/fail assignments. With a rubric, click a level for each criterion and add comments; the total is added up for you.

  3. Write feedback

What went well, and what to work on next. Students see it with their grade.

  4. Save and move on

Save and grade next (Ctrl or ⌘ + Enter) jumps to the next student without going back to the list. Save and finish on the last one.

Late work

If the work came in late and the assignment has a late penalty, the screen says so and shows the score that will be recorded, for example “Handed in late. 10% is taken off per day late.”

Send work back

Choose Send back to return work for changes, with a note on what to fix (for example “Add the working for question 3”). The student can change it and hand it in again; it shows as Sent back until they do.

Filters

Show To grade, Everyone, Graded, Sent back or Not handed in. The class overview shows how many handed in, the average, the lowest and highest scores, and how many were late.

Grade quiz essays

Open the quiz, then Submissions, filter by Needs grading, and open an attempt. Give points for each essay and feedback for the student. If the quiz shows results after teacher review, choose Release results when you’re done so students can see their scores.

What students see

Students get a notification when work is graded or sent back. They see the score, the rubric levels, your feedback and the class average next to their own. If the course hides grades from students (an option when the course is created), they won’t see scores.

Where grades go

Every grade lands in the gradebook and on report cards for the term the work was due in. There’s nothing to copy.
